Who were the CLC?
The Chinese Labour Corps were a group of workers brought over from China to help the British and French during WWI.
The majority were positioned at the Western Front to provide labour and logistical help. It's thought that as many as 140,000 went but 20,000 never made it back home.
The forgotten
The Chinese Labour Corps contribution to history has largely been forgotten
An estimated 20,000 of a force of 140,000 never made it back home. In the UK, there are over 100,000 war memorials, 60,000 or so dedicated to those in World War One, but not a single one to the CLC.
Not only that, knowledge of who they were and what they did has largely gone unknown and unrecognised. The vast majority of the British public, and global public for that matter, have little or no knowledge of the CLC, and that their contributions during the war helped change the course of history.
The lack of memorials in the UK is extremely disappointing, especially considering there are memorials to the CLC in France and Belgium.
